each year since 1945 the mouton rothschild label is illustrated by a contemporary artist?s original work.
i decided however to derogate from this usage for the 2003 vintage, the 150th anniversary of of the acquisition of mouton by my family. it was on the 11th of may 1853 that my direct ancestor, baron nathaniel de rothschild (1812-1870), who is pictured here from a period print, acquired this legendary growth. partially reproduced in the background is the act of purchase of the domaine, the beginning of a long love story between the rothschilds and the great wines of bordeaux.
therefore, quite exceptionally, the future is conjugated with memories, art is replaced by a document and the painting by a photograph.
