a classified first growth in the bordeaux region, chateau mouton rothschild is one of the greatest wines in the world. it covers 82 hectares in pauillac, in the medoc, and is planted to the noble bordeaux varietals. the estate was brought to its summit of quality by the baron phillippe de rothschild (1902-1988) who also made it a place of art and beauty, today it is owned by his granddaughter the baronne philippine de rothschild. since 1945, each year a noted artist creates an original work for the label in full freedom.
the illustration of the 2008 vintage had been entrusted to the painter xu lei, born in 1963. at the time, powerful and refined, his poetic realism associates the cosmos and intimacy, the figurative and the symbolic, the pictorial tradition of his country and the occidental modernity. his design for mouton, reclaims the classic theme of the ram, emblem of the vineyard. perched on top of a rock delicately carved. the ram of xu lei affirms the role of a grand wine as a feature of the union between men and cultures, from one hemisphere to the other of the 'vine planet'.
