château mouton rothschild " back label 2008
a first growth from the bordeaux region, château mouton rothschild is one of the world's finest wines. it comprises almost 200 acres of vines at pauillac in the médoc, planted with classic bordeaux varieties. brought to the pinnacle by baron philippe de rothschild (1902-1988), who also made it a place of art and beauty, the estate now belongs to his daughter, baroness philippine de rothschild.
each year since 1945 a famous artist has created an original artwork for the label, with complete freedom as to the design.
the commission to illustrate the 2008 vintage was given to the chinese painter xu lei, born in 1963. both powerful and refined, his poetic realism combines the cosmic and the intimate, the figurative and the symbolic, his country's pictorial tradition and western modernity. his drawing for mouton takes up the classic theme of the ram, the emblem of the château. perched on top of a delicately delineated rock, xu lei's ram asserts the role of a great wine as a link between people and cultures, from one hemisphere to another of "planet wine".
