each year since 1945, the mouton rothschild label is illustrated by an original creation of a contemporary painter.
however, for the 2003 vintage, i decided to depart from this custom at the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the purchase of the estate by my family : on may 11th 1853, my direct ancestor nathaniel de rothschild (1812-1870), photographed at that time, bought this legendary chateau. a part of the purchase contract is reproduced in the label background as a symbol of the long love story between the rothschild family and the great bordeaux wines.
exceptionally, future meets memory, documents replace art and photography prevails over painting.
