every year since 1945, the label of mouton rothschild is illustrated by a modern painter?s work of art.
for the 2003 vintage, i have decided to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the acquisition of mouton by our family. on may 11th 1853, my direct ancestor, the baron nathaniel de rothschild (1812-1870), who is represented on this authentic picture, became the owner of this legendary wine.
the background of the label reproduces a part of the chateau?s buying act, that marks the beginning of a long love story between the rothschild family and the great wines of bordeaux.
then, exceptionally, the future comes together with the memory, the art is replaced by the document and the painting by the photography.
