a first growth from the bordeaux region, château mouton rothschild is one of the world's finest wines. it comprises almost 200 acres of vines at pauillac in the médoc, planted with classic bordeaux varieties. brought to the pinnacle by baron philippe de rothschild (1902-1988), who also made it a place of art and beauty, the estate now belongs to his daughter, baroness philippine de rothschild.
each year since 1945 a famous artist has created an original artwork for the label, with complete freedom as to the design.
the commission for the 2007 label was given to the french sculptor bernar venet, born in 1941, known worldwide for his monumental steel "lines", which alternate the geometric austerity of straight lines and curves with the profusion of random coils.
the arcs he has drawn for mouton evoke chalices rooted in the earth and open, like vinestocks, to the precious gifts from above.
