explanation: hazlitt 1852 vineyards was founded as a winery in 1984 and incorporated in new york state as hazlitt 1852 vineyards, inc., in 1994. the winery holds both a federal basic permit (bw-ny-710) and a new york farm winery license (ny-fw-56) in that name. the winery name is reflective of the hazlitt family"s vineyard heritage of owning and producing grapes on their farm since 1852. in the early days, the grapes and tree fruits were sold in regional markets. when demand for grapes from the wineries in nearby hammondsport grew, grapes were sold to them for a number of years until the late 1970"s and early 1980"s when those wineries reduced their annual grape purchases. new york state passed legislation at the time enabling the operation of small farm wineries and hazlitt 1852 vineyards winery was established as another outlet for the family"s grapes. founder jerome hazlitt is now deceased and the winery is operated by his wife and children (6th generation hazlitts).
the winery has submitted well over 100 labels for batf/ttb approval over the years it has operated, as well as several submitted by doyle acquisition corporation [pleasant valley wine company] dba hazlitt red cat cellars for contract bottling purposes, with hazlitt 1852 vineyards appearing without qualification on the brand label.
