dear ttb,
the grape skins are left intact for a period of time while the grape must ferments, allowing a certain amount of the reddish grape skin color to become infused into the wine. contrary to most of the common wines in the marketplace, pinot grigio is actually a red grape varietal. most producers don't allow the skin to contact the must during maceration. this producer allows the natural colors of the pinot grigio's skin to be released into the wine, producing a pinkish hue, hence the designation as a rose wine.
