the classified premier cru of the region of bordeaux, the chateau mouton rothschild is one of the best wines of the world. it accounts for 80 hectares of vines at pauillac, in medoc, planted with noble grapes of the bordelais. raised to its height by baron philippe de rothschild (1902-1988), who also transformed it into an area of art & beauty, which belongs now to his daughter, baroness philippine de rothschild. since 1945 each year a famous artist creates an original work for the label, who is given complete freedom in its creation. the commission of the illustration of the 2009 vintage was given to anish kapoor, an english sculptor & visual artist of indian origin, born in 1954, who is a major figure in the world of contemporary art. his work transcends the diversity of the world through a constant invention of form & new experiences, which combine serenity and violence, abstraction and color, mysticism and sensuality. his gouache, austere and flamboyant at the same time, created for mouton, express the fertile surge of vegetation, the result of the intense meeting between matter and light.
