caterina cornaro, queen of cyprus, was born in venice in 1454. she belonged to one of the most influential noble families of the venetian republic, the corner. as the widow of the king of cyprus, she was forced to abdicate by the venetian republic. in exchange, she was granted the ladyship of asolo, famous for wine-growing ever since, where she was surrounded by poets and artists who enjoyed fine wine to accompany their feast.
