each year since 1945, an original artwork by a contemporary painter has illustrated the mouton rothschild label.
however, i have decided to depart from that tradition for the 2003 vintage, the 150th anniversary of mouton's entry into the family. it was on 11 may 1853 that my direct ancestor, baron nathaniel de rothschild (1812-1870), depicted here in a period photograph, acquired this legendary estate. the background of the label shows part of the deed of sale, the beginning of a long love story between the rothschilds and the great wines of bordeaux.
