a first growth from the bordeaux region, chateau mouton rothschild is one of the world's finest wines. it comprises over 200 acres of vines at pauillac in the medoc, planted with classic bordeaux varieties. brought to the pinnacle by baron philippe de rothschild (1902-1988), who also made it a place of art and beauty, the estate now belongs to his daughter, baroness philippine de rothschild.
each year since 1945 a famous artist has created an original artwork for the mouton label. the artist have complete freedom with regard to their design.
the commission for the 2002 label was given to ilya kabakov. born in 1933 he is a leading figure of contemporary russion art and well known illustrator, painter and creator of installation
kabakov has entitled his drawing for mouton "okho" a russian word meaning "window". behind the 'pane of the bottle, the artist shows us another world, whirling to infinity, myriads of wings trace its outlines, at the same time bearing us off joyfully towards the realsm of dreams, and bliss, in a trasnparent allegory of the magic of a great wine
