william buckley was raised in england by his single mother eliza and her parents in england, served with distinction in the king"s regiment, the lure of easy money were allegedly his downfall. convicted for stealing, he was sentenced to transport to the penal colony of sullivan bay and 14 years in lock up. william cut loose a boat and rowed away with other inmates. others headed north towards sydney, mr. buckley headed south into aboriginal land. from that day forward, anyone given no hope of achieving any task was given "buckley"s chance".
buckley was just mad enough to take that chance " living the next 32 years with the local aboriginal tribe. buckley walked back into civilization, pardoned and even given a government job! some accounts say that while you can take buckley out of the wild, you can"t take the wild out of buckley. he grew weary of an organized life and headed back to nature, this time in van diemen"s land " now tasmania " where he lived out his days.
